Calcium Investigations

We read about calcium..... 

and figured out that calcium compounds are in bones, they are hard and can be dissolved in acid.  So we put the bones in vinegar.

This is what we saw.  The calcium had come out of the bones and.....

the bones were soft!

Levels of Life

Students figured out that cells make up tissues and tissues make up organs.

Osmosis

Students observed 4 different phenomena to figure out what OSMOSIS is.

We looked at cucumbers in water and cucumbers in salt water.  Why are the salt water cucumbers so mushy??

We looked at celery that had been sitting in red water.  Why are the celery leaves red?

We created a "cell" using dialysis tubing, corn starch and water.  Why did the corn starch turn black/purple?

We observed onion cells in water and in salt water.  Why did the cells shrink?

We figured it out!!
