There was a drought!!

Students had a GREAT discussion today trying to figure out what caused the drought in 1934.  We'll have to do a little more investigation to completely answer this question.  Here is what we know so far.

Students are trying to figure out the just right conditions for making it rain.

Dust Bowl Models

Mrs. Urda's class worked on revising their models today.  They are using models to help them figure out what caused the dust bowl.  They completed their first mystery and figured out that the area has very little water.  This is another piece to the puzzle..... What caused the dust bowl?

How do scientists know so much??

They figured out that scientists pay close attention to things and ask questions..... they are curious!   Students were challenged to really notice their hands.....

"Why does nail polish stick to nails?"

"Why do we have nails?"

"What is that soft stuff between our pointer finger and thumb?"

"Why are thumbs, thumbs and not fingers?"

"Why do we have hands?"

"How do nails grow?"

Third Grade Mystery Science Lessons

We kicked off mystery science units in the third grade this week!

 Students are watching a video of a sky diver jumping through a cloud.  They are trying to figure out where clouds come from.

 Students are using a model to figure out where the mystery fossils belong.

Students figured out the push and pull forces of their hoppers.

Creating a Driving Question Board

Students in Mrs. Urda's 5th grade class are trying to figure out..... What caused the DUST BOWL in the 1930s.  

Today they created a driving question board.  This will help them to develop next steps in their quest to solve this phenomenon.
