Does the Mystery Matter eat sugar?

The students fed the mystery matter some sugar.  They tested for the presence of sugar and found that there was less sugar in the test tube 24 hours later and the test tubes were bubbling.

IS THE MYSTERY MATTER ALIVE?

Students have been wrestling with this question for a week now.   They have figured out that there are characteristics that ALL living things have.  Students decided to test each one to determine if the mystery matter is alive or not.  So far they have looked at it under the microscope and determined that it is made out of cells.
